Climate Actions
In a rapidly changing environment, Nike is constantly monitoring its carbon footprint and revisiting its business practices based on the most current scientific data available. In FY19, Nike set an ambitious Science-Based Target (SBTi) to reduce its carbon footprint by 2030, including a 65% absolute reduction across Scope 1 and 2 emissions and 30% across Scope 3 emissions from a 2015 baseline. In addition to these 2030 targets aligned to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), Nike has also set a series of 2025 carbon targets to further accelerate its efforts (with an FY20 baseline and aligned to the timeframe of its other corporate targets). Nike’s efforts to decarbonize its value chain and meet these targets include work to innovate and scale low-carbon materials; support suppliers’ transition to renewable energy; reduce air freight; leadership on clean energy and efficiency investments in Nike’s owned and operated spaces; and collaborate across industries to advance these efforts beyond Nike’s direct reach.
Climate Milestone
2024
- Jointly released the "White Paper on the Full Life Cycle Carbon Footprint of Nike Footwear Products" with the Institute for Carbon Neutrality, Tsinghua University.
- MSCI Rating: BB2023
-In FY23, SCAP expanded to include suppliers that now account for more than 65% of strategic supplier emissions. These suppliers have science-aligned targets for their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and are leading the industry to decarbonize through their GHG reduction commitments. During FY23, NIKE led stakeholder workshops with SCAP members culminating in a 10-year action plan, which outlines the priorities for achieving NIKE and suppliers’ shared climate ambitions.
-Unveiled NIKE’s Zero Carbon Smart Logistics Center in Taicang, China.
- In FY23, Greater China (GC) launched a first of its kind Recycle-A-Shoe (RAS) service online and in-store. Through a partnership with Alipay Ant Forest via NIKE’s RAS application, we were able to launch a new digital takeback program that makes product drop-off easier for consumers. NIKE also launched the Recycle-A-Shoe service across 30 university campuses and 13 GC NIKE stores, a new initiative we are working to scale further in 2024.2020
- Launched the Supplier Climate Action Plan (SCAP), Encouraged suppliers to develop company-wide, long-term climate mitigation plans to strategically address climate change. This includes the following key elements: identifying greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories; setting science-based targets for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across all footwear and apparel operations (including non-Nike activities); publicly disclosing climate-related information through CDP; and collaborating with Nike to explore climate-related risks and opportunities within the extended supply chain.
- Joined forces with 330 companies to urge the U.S. Congress to include long-term climate solutions in future economic recovery plans.
